The Gemstel Pass in the Allgäu Alps connects Mittelberg in Kleinwalsertal with Hochkrumbach. The pass is at 1972 m below the Großer Widderstein. The Widdersteinhütte is located directly at the pass.

A mule track has led over the pass since the Middle Ages, which is now a hiking trail and part of the Walserweg. It is assumed that the Kleinwalsertal was settled via the pass from the 13th century.

The moderately difficult (according to the SAC scale) crossing of the pass takes place from Mittelberg via the rear Gemstelalpe. The climb further to the upper Gemstelalpe is exposed but secured. Surefootedness is required. The pass is also suitable for a mountain bike crossing.

Guarded to the west by the imposing rock towers of the Widderstein, the panoramic Gemstelpass is an ancient mule track for the Walsers that leads to their northernmost colony.

The Kleinwalsertal valley was probably first settled at the end of the 13th century through the Gemsteltal valley down to Mittelberg. Mittelberg was the first municipality north of the ridge to give its name to the Walser court, which was separated from the Tannberg in 1563.

For centuries, the idyllic mountain path was very busy with pack animals and on foot, as family ties, possessions and trade extended far across the mountain flanks. Smuggling was still a habit until the 20th century, while today people are more likely to take home fabulous natural impressions.
