Best Hikes to Bokrijk Open-Air Museum

Tips

  • The Provincial Domain of Bokrijk is 550 hectares and is located in the middle of extensive forest and nature reserves. The domain is best known for its open-air museum, the Bokrijk open-air museum was officially opened on 12 April 1958. About one hundred and forty buildings form the core of the heritage collection. In addition to these buildings, the collection also consists of tools and everyday utensils. In total, this comprises 30,000 pieces of fragile heritage and testify to daily life from the 17th century to 1950. The open-air museum has 140 historic buildings. The smaller constructions such as baking ovens or runs for poultry are not included. Although the oldest building dates from 1507, the collection consists mainly of structures from the late 17th to the end of the 19th century. The emphasis is in particular on agricultural courts and barns. In addition, important buildings for village life (blacksmith, school, church, inn and craft buildings) are also included in the collection every day. A street with town houses has also been realized. The domain also included several recordings for television series and feature films such as the TV series Johan en de Alverman and the Suske en Wiske feature film De dark diamond.
