The planting of the linden tree dates back to around 1600. The tree originally served as a court lime tree. In 1922, a bronze commemorative plaque was attached to the trunk of the linden tree, commemorating the victims of the First World War in Oberwartha. Next to the names of the 12 fallen and the years 1914 and 1918 is the saying "Don't forget, my people, the faithful dead!" on the black board. The linden tree was placed under protection in 1958 as a natural monument "because of its size and special landscape-defining effect as well as for cultural-historical reasons".
