The Plaggenhütte in Nordloh is one of Apen's favorite places. The small dwelling, which commemorates Grandma Puls and her hard life in the moor, was recently redesigned jointly by members of the Nordloh Local Citizens' Association and the Apen community.

This memory of this Plaggenhütte gives an idea of the primitive conditions under which the bog settlers lived. As the first settlers, male servants often competed, who attracted the prospect of property and the exemption from taxes and military service to the moor. Cultivation was hard work and life in the moor was full of privation. The replica of this peat plague hut may convey that. The huts were built from peat sod and served as dwelling until the land was drained and space was made for a stone building. This plagging hut is also a reminder of a woman who lived in such a hut until her tad in 1916 because she had given birth to a child out of wedlock and was therefore expelled from the village community.
