During the excavations carried out in the interior of the castle in 1951/52, the ground plans of the house were uncovered and numerous potsherds, loom weights, iron implements and soapstone vessels were recovered.

Close to Borgsum is Lembecksburg. It is an old fortification from the Viking Age. The castle got its name in the 14th century when the knight Klaus Lembeck was governor.

The dominant ring wall lies on a natural Geestkern. The 95m castle interior is protected by an approximately 10m high wall, which is interrupted in the south by a gate. There is a low rampart and a shallow ditch in the eastern foreland.
