The Gierather Forest nature reserve attempts to permanently protect the typical deciduous forest areas, through which natural streams flow, and larger wet areas rich in peat and moss, as well as birch and alder groves. In the 19th century, iron ore was mined in the Gierather Forest. From the Habsburg mine, you can still see the pits in the middle of the forest.
