At the entrance to the grounds of the Army Research Institute Peenemünde East and the proving ground of the Luftwaffe Peenemünde West was the Hauptwache. It consisted of the guard building with the rooms for the guards and a post office. On the first floor of the building was an apartment in which the head of the news center lived with his family. Furthermore belonged to this complex a garage area. The main watch was a checkpoint for the traffic. Due to the high security regulations, the individual restricted areas could only be entered with appropriate authorizations. The staff of the research institutes had special badges and badges in various shapes and colors. These plaques were visible on the clothing to wear. In the course of the expansion of the beginnings of the trial, the importance of the Hauptwache diminished, since individual guards were set up in the individual areas. After the war, the main guard was removed by dismantling troops to the remains still existing today.

As part of international summer camps in July 2000 and in August 2007, the foundations of the former main police station and part of the road were uncovered in cooperation with the association "Norddeutsche Jugend im Internationaler Gemeinschaftsdienst" and the then historical-technical information center Peenemünde. Young people from Poland, France, Algeria, Russia, Japan, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey and Germany made history visible in these camps. Since 2013, this monument has been maintained permanently by students of the working group "Regional History" of the Heinrich Heine School Karlshagen. The project "Schülerpatenschaft für eine Bodendenkmal" is a cooperation between the school and the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde. In the next few years, further measures are planned at the Hauptwache.
