When the Saxon dynasty of the Wettin split in 1485 at the Leipzig division in two lines, fell the previous main residence, the Albrechtsburg in Meissen, in the possession of the Albertine line of Wettin. Elector Friedrich III. and his successors later had the castle Hartenfels expanded into the new main residence of the Ernestine line in Torgau. The palace building was begun in the 15th century by Konrad Pflüger, a pupil of Arnold von Westfalen, and continued in the 16th century by Konrad Krebs. It is the largest completely preserved castle of the early renaissance of Germany.
