Anyone looking for Eisden's mining past will discover traces that are as diverse as they are striking. They stood like exclamation marks in a history that threatened to be erased after the mine closed and the complete demolition of the mining heritage was decided. A mining site whose facades form the architectural conclusion of the residential cores: the old cités. There are also four restored and converted mining buildings, a director's house and a miner's house, three statues, each representing a different era of fine art, a castle... An offering that could not be more diverse against the uniform background.

There is a lot to discover in Flanders' only national park: More than 12,000 hectares of beautiful and original nature with wonderful cycling tours await you.

Terhills is the main entrance. After the end of coal mining, nature was given free rein here. Rare butterflies now flutter at the spot where the Eisden coal mine was still running at full speed 26 years ago. You can climb three of the four existing mountain peaks. From the peaks you have an unforgettable view of the surrounding landscape of the Maas Valley and the Hoge Kempen National Park.
You have an even more beautiful view from the shaft of the former coal mine in Eisden - after all, it goes twelve meters high! On the ground floor you can get an impression of the past of this mine in a photo exhibition.

From the main entrance you can see the Ecotron, 13 high-tech ecosystem chambers in which researchers from Hasselt University simulate different climate scenarios. They want to investigate the effects of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity.

Tip: there is plenty of room on the enormous terrace of Brasserie De Karbonkel! Strengthen yourself here for the further journey.
