The lake south of Leipzig was created from a former open-cast lignite mine and attracts over 600,000 visitors annually. A 10.4 kilometer long paved circular path leads around the lake.
Absolutely great: You can paddle a kayak or canoe directly from Leipzig city center, six kilometers away, via a canal connection to the lake. The two-kilometer-long sandy beach on the north bank or Pier1, the lively harbor on the east bank of the lake, are ideal for swimming.

Hard to believe: The "Cossi" emerged from a dusty coal mine. Up until 1990, the output amounted to 87 million tons of lignite, and the open-cast mine was only shut down after massive demands from the population. In 1993, flooding began with groundwater and water from neighboring opencast mines. By the year 2000, the area was designed as a local recreation area. Today the Cospudener See belongs to the southern Neuseenland.
