Similar to the Cospudener See, the Zwenkauer See also originated from a lignite opencast mine. Until 2018 it was flooded with groundwater from the active Schleenhain opencast mine. With 970 hectares, the lake is now the largest body of water in southern New Lakeland. Incidentally, the Zwenkauer See also serves as a flood reservoir: In an emergency, the flow of the Weißen Elster is lowered, the flood water flows into the lake and Leipzig is thus spared from flooding.
