The Guardian Angel Chapel Sušice (Schüttenhofen)
A widely recognizable landmark of Sušice is the chapel on Stráž (Guard) hill, which locals affectionately call "Andělíček" (little guardian angel). Since the small chapel is surrounded by a square cloister, it resembles the pilgrimage church of Svatá Hora on the Holy Hill near Příbram and also resembles "Loreto" chapels.
According to legend, they should have erected parents of a shepherd boy out of gratitude because a poison snake did not bite, although it had wound itself around the foot of their offspring. This story is depicted on the image of the guardian angel, which used to be carried to the chapel during pilgrimage festivals and is now kept in the Sušice vicarage. In fact, two women from Schüttenhof may have started building the chapel after surviving the plague in the 17th century.
The chapel was consecrated in 1683 and should have been given the surrounding cloister with the side altars around 1730.
If you're on a bike, it's best to first take road 171 for the 70 meters up the hill. The effort is also worth it because of the magnificent view of the area.
