Just a few meters beyond the Limes—and thus outside the Roman Empire—another rampart with a shallow ditch can still be seen today. This is not an additional Roman border fortification, but rather the remains of the Landwehr (land defense) built by the imperial city of Schwäbisch Hall in the late Middle Ages. It has a minimum circumference of 185 km and initially served as a defensive line, later more as a legal border. Interestingly, the so-called Haller Landhege (Haller Landhege) runs exactly parallel to the Roman Limes between Mönchsberg and Mainhardt.
