From the small Plauer castle from the 13th century castle was built in the 15th century. In the 16th century, through further expansion, it was one of the largest fortresses in northern Germany. The castle was heavily destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. Today, the keep, the dungeon and a barn are still preserved in the barn is now the castle museum.
