The fens are located in the Buikheide and Oude Molen forest area, which is owned by the municipality of Eersel and covers 520 hectares. Because they are not acidified, they have special plant growth, which is why they were designated as a protected natural monument in 1990. They are part of the Natura 2000 area Kempenland-West. Drifting of sand during the cold period of the Weichselian caused the formation naturally.
