The castle bastion, built between 1556 and 1562, was converted into a pleasure garden by Hans Richter, court gardener to Archduke Charles II, in 1568. This pleasure garden became the present-day castle garden. It was originally much larger, but Empress Maria Theresa ceded parts of it to the Styrian Estates, who had the Graz Theater built there.
