The building, known to the people of Koblenz as the "Pegelhaus", was erected in 1611 under Elector von Metternich as a Rhine crane.
Since 1839, the building has served as the Rhine gauge for the city of Koblenz. In 1887, a level meter was set up next to the entrance to show the water level of the Rhine.

The high water marks to the right of the entrance bear witness to the highest water levels since 1882.

More than 400 years after it was built, the restaurant in the gauge house is located here today. The glass roof added for the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show combines the location directly on the banks of the Rhine with a unique view over the Rhine and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
