In the early modern period, the Oberbürg was considered one of the most magnificent Nuremberg mansions. The moated castle, located in a pond, was most likely not, as Friedrich August Nagel assumed, the original Laufamholz Reich Ministerial Castle. Rather, as Ansgar Wittek has explained, the Oberbürg as a seat probably only came into being in the 15th century, after the division of ownership in 1407/09 [cf. Unterbürg]. At that time Hans d. J. Groland took over the property in the area of what would later become Oberbürg. There was an imperial farmstead there that was burned down in the First Margrave War in 1449 and lay in ruins for many years.
