Dam with a lot of history:
The Möhne Dam was badly damaged in World War II by a British bombing raid on the night of May 16-17, 1943.🧨

The imposing Möhne Dam, consisting of more than 250,000 cubic meters of rubble stone, stops the flow of the Möhne below Günne and dams up the two rivers Möhne and Heve to form the Möhnesee. The 650-meter-wide and 40-meter-high dam can withstand the enormous pressure of up to 134.5 million cubic meters of water due to its weight alone. Its appearance is characterized by the wide base of the wall (34 meters) and the narrow crown (over six meters wide). Thanks to its parabolic construction, the Möhne Dam, designed by Franz Brantzky, also appears surprisingly narrow and elegant.

Before man tamed nature with the construction of the Möhne Dam, the agriculturally dominated Möhne Valley was repeatedly exposed to catastrophic floods caused by meltwater coming from the Sauerland. In summer, however, residents suffered from water shortages in dry years. So it was decided to build a dam where the small Heve flows into the larger Möhne, which would also serve to supply water to the nearby Ruhr area.

The power station building once stood in the old compensation pond.
