Kastanija Bay (Novigrad) to Groznan Loop
Nestled on Croatia’s sun‑drenched Adriatic coast, Istria is a region where Venetian history, rolling vineyards, and medieval hilltop towns blend into one of Europe’s most rewarding cycling landscapes. The peninsula is famous for its olive oil, truffles, Malvazija wine, and a network of quiet rural roads that wind through forests, valleys, and ancient stone villages. This full route begins and ends at Kastanija Bay, just outside Novigrad, a coastal town known for its Roman roots and crystal‑clear waters. From there, the ride climbs steadily inland toward Grožnjan, a hilltop village perched at around 288 metres above sea level. Grožnjan is often called the “Town of Artists”, home to more than 20 galleries and a summer-long classical music academy. The complete loop showcases the contrast that defines Istria: coastal calm, rural backroads, and panoramic hilltop views—all within a single ride. - Istria was ruled by Venice for over 500 years, which is why many towns have Italian names and bilingual signs. - The region is famous for white truffles, especially around the Mirna Valley near Motovun and Grožnjan. - Istria is Croatia’s leading producer of extra virgin olive oil, with several oils ranked among the best in the world. - The peninsula has over 500 km of marked cycling routes, ranging from coastal paths to challenging hill climbs. - Grožnjan hosts the Jeunesses Musicales International Summer Academy, attracting musicians from around the world. Völkermarkter Stausee & Klopeiner See Loop from Kühnsdorf Bahnhof
The Jauntal is named after the ancient Roman settlement of Juenna and is flanked in the south with the Karawanken mountain range. To the north is the river Drau, where the river is damned for Hydropower (a Stausee). The Jauntal is a crossroads of Roman history, Slovene culture, and Austrian Alpine geography. The valley’s bilingual heritage is still visible in place names, traditions, and local communities. Jauntal is home to Klopeiner See (Lake Klopein), the warmest lake in Austria, one of the warmest lakes in Europe and the warmest alpine lake in Europe. Klopeiner See reaches an incredible 28 degrees Celsius in summer and remarkably, is drinking water quality. This ride takes you down to the Drau Stausee and along the R1 Drautal Cycle path. We then leave the R1 and head to Lake Klopeiner See, before returning back to the train station at Kuhnsdorf.
