During the week and when it's not in season, I can only recommend the tour, otherwise there are too many people!

Please note that "Prima Cappella" is not a proper name for this hike. "Prima Cappella" is just the first of a series of 14 stations ("cappelle") built in the 17th century which display scenes of Jesus Christ's life with life-size statues. The whole path is known as "Sacro Monte di Varese" and has been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Definitely recommended (best enjoyed off-season and during the week)!!!

The chapel was commissioned by the Litta brothers, nobles from Milan, in memory of their family coat of arms.
The eight statues are by Martino Retti
(1608), who wanted to create figures that "would reproduce as much as possible the naturalness". In the centre is the suffering Christ, over whom the henchmen are drawing grotesque faces. In the background are three large fresco scenes by Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, alias Morazzone (1609):
Christ before Caiaphas; Christ and Barabbas shown to the people; the naked Christ being drawn to be scourged.
