Best Hikes to St. Mary's Church Ribnitz (Stadtkirche St. Marien Ribnitz)

Tips

  • The town church of St. Marien with its massive tower is visible from afar and dominates the cityscape. It is a brick building from the 13th century.
. It was immediately rebuilt and furnished in the baroque style (altar and pulpit). At the beginning of the 1980s, the interior of the church underwent further changes: a winter church was built and the half-timbering in the nave was exposed. The tower (49 meters high, 214 steps) is accessible, and the viewing platform offers a beautiful view over the town of Ribnitz and its surroundings. When visibility is good, the towers of Rostock can be seen with the naked eye. Organ concerts and exhibitions take place regularly in the summer months.

  • a brick building with a tower that can be seen from afar, stands in the eastern old town right on the market square. Even before the first written mention of the city Ribnitz (rybanitz - fish village) in 1233, a church was built at this point. The old round arch frieze on the west side of the nave indicates the starting point of the construction of St. Mary's Church.
After an extension to the east and the cultivation of the choir after the city fire in 1455, the St. Mary's Church has preserved its current plan of the East-West axis. The transept was demolished in 1803/04. The tower, today 49 meters high (up to the top of the cross about 55 m), originally measured around 100 meters and was marked in the former nautical charts as a landmark. It was probably built after the city fire of 1455. Its 214 steps lead up to the viewing platform. It offers a magnificent view over Ribnitz and the Bodden landscape. In good weather you can see the Petrikirche and the Marienkirche of Rostock with the naked eye - you can also observe the ships entering and leaving the harbor.
