Sankt Catharinæ Kirke is a cruciform church (dedicated to Saint Catharina of Alexandria). It is the largest church in Hjørring and is located near the old town square. It consists of a late Romanesque core of bricks, but is dominated by later changes and additions. These are the late Gothic choir in the east, the sacristy in the north, the chapel in the south, the tower in the west (mid-15th century) and the wooden north wing (today the main nave) from 1924-26 with a veranda in the north on the east side.

Located in the heart of Hjørring's old town, St. Catherine's Church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, who was beheaded by Emperor Maxentius in 307 AD for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Since the early Middle Ages, Saint Catherine of Alexandria has been a patron saint of Hjørring, as the townspeople included her image in the city's coat of arms. Over time, St. Catherine's Church has undergone countless renovations and expansions. Today, the original medieval church can be seen, as this section forms the transept of the current church. To assess the church's origins, it was a late Romanesque brick building—the same style as St. John's Church in Hjørring. The large tower was built in the 14th century. On the south side of the nave and east of the armory, a large and beautiful chapel was built for the mother of the Virgin Mary, Saint Anne, one of the most famous saints in the Middle Ages. Hjørring experienced failure and poverty over the next three centuries, and therefore no further changes were made to the church. At the end of the 17th century, when the city's fortunes improved, the upper part of the tower was renovated, and the church gable received a coat of arms. The baptismal area was designed in the Roman style and carved with Gotland limestone. The large altar, dating from 1651, is in the Baroque style and depicts the Last Supper. The altar was carved by Christian Billedsnider and decorated in the following years by the painter Johannes Kontrafeje.
