These boats were originally used to collect moliço, but are now used more for tourism purposes.

It is one of the symbols of Aveiro, along with Ovos Moles and the University of Aveiro. Among the typical boats of the region, the moliceiro is considered the most elegant; despite its colourful and humorous decoration, it is a work boat for collecting moliço, which was the main source of fertiliser on the agricultural lands of Aveiro.
