The fort was built from 1617 to 1626 on 52-meter high Mount Hill, just east of the ruins of St. Paul's. It was the city's main military defense structure and crucial to the successful defenses of Macau against the Dutch in 1622. The fortress was a military restricted area until 1965.

    Today is the Macau Museum.

The castello offers beautiful views over the city.

The many pigeons (mostly white) are a popular photo motif, especially on the extremely large number of cannons.

When you are heading up to the ruins of St. Paul’s, the Castello will be on you right. It is a fairly short walk up, but some of the stairs can be a little steep. Access is free of charge, and you can enjoy great views in all directions - and can easily understand why the castello was built here.
