The fountain on the market square is a reminder of goat farming in Lügde. The former residents of the medieval town of Lügde were not wealthy citizens, but mostly so-called farmers who had to make a living from small farming and livestock farming.

Another peculiarity typical of Lügde was that the goats were kept individually in the individual houses, but the daily expulsion was organized as a sort of "cooperative". Every morning the goats were called with the horn and led by the Lügder goatherd to graze the pastures. The historical photos of the morning expulsion through Mittlere Straße still exist. In the evening the goats were led back by the herdsman to the meeting place on the market square and picked up by their owners if the goat didn't even find its way home on its own.
