The choir of the former hospital church was built in 1437. The nave was destroyed by arson in 1886. The paintings on the altar wall date from the time it was built.

The services of the Hämmerer Guild or Eligius Brotherhood took place in the chapel. This guild included the professions that worked with the hammer, such as goldsmiths, locksmiths, joiners, bricklayers and carpenters. The members were called "Loyal Brothers", just as the church was popularly called "Loukierch", a derivation from the French form of the name Eligius.
