From a distance, the ruined castle seems quite battered, but actually the residential building is very well preserved and is inhabited until today. Therefore, the rest of the castle can only be visited from the outside.

Falkenstein Castle is the ruin of a high medieval spur castle near Waldhof-Falkenstein on the Our in Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate.

From the city of Luxembourg on foot to reach the place Bivels. From there it goes, over the border bridge north of Bivels, to Germany and then a steadily ascending way up to the castle ruin Falkenstein. If you continue up this path, you will come across a narrow rocky path that leads to a rest bench with a beautiful view of Falkenstein Castle.

Unfortunately you can no longer visit the ruin. It seems to be quite dilapidated by now. The castle is now privately owned. One of the outbuildings is privately owned. A nice view of the old walls makes up for the steep ascent to the ruins.

Amazing castle ruins, the fact that you cannot go inside just makes it more mysterious and appealing. Some great nature and views around too. When you continue on the path, that gets rather steep, there's an excellent viewpoint later on with a bench on your left, that allows great view of the Falkenstein castle from high

Falkenstein Castle was one of those seven castles that secured the possessions of the County of Vianden in the Middle Ages, which at that time was as big as today's Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Today the castle is privately owned, a visit is not possible. Source: eifel.info/a-burgruine-falkenstein

The ruins of Falkenstein Castle rise on a steep mountain spur high above the Our valley. Below the castle, the Our winds in a distinctive loop, which here forms the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Today only the tower, house and Romanesque chapel of the castle, first mentioned in the 12th century, are preserved. Source: naturpark-suedeifel.de/a-burgruine-falkenstein
