Located on the western beach of the Darß peninsula, the Darß Forest, part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park, covers an area of over 5,000 hectares. It stretches in the south towards Ahrenshoop and in the north to Darßer Ort with the lighthouse and the Natureum. However, there are no settlements in the area.
The Darßwald was formerly used as pastureland, which is also indicated by the unusually grown beech population. Spruce, yew, larch and Douglas firs also grow here. The natural rejuvenation of the tree population is at least hindered by a high game population of red deer and roe deer as well as the extensive bracken.
The forest is criss-crossed by a long network of hiking, cycling, riding and horse-drawn carriage paths. A circular hiking trail at Darßer Ort even leads partly over wooden planks through a swampy area in which there are two viewing platforms that offer a wide view of the delightful landscape.
