Grey Knotts is the fell most easily accessed from the spectacular Honister Pass, home of the world-famous Westmorland Green Slate. Its eastern cliffs, particularly the dramatic Raven Crag, rise abruptly above the majestic hanging valley of Gillercomb. Meanwhile, its northern flanks are more gradual, leading to a rough broad summit characterised by grey tors and little tarns.
Many begin their ascent to Grey Knotts from the top of the Honister Pass. The slate mining heritage here, which is still going strong today, is plainly obvious when you start an adventure. There’s a café, shop, mine tours and all manner of adventurous activities, such as a Via Ferrata.
However, a longer approach from Seathwaite into Gillercombe is more peaceful and rewards you with finer scenery. From Grey Knott’s summit, Great Gable’s impressive Gable Crag is seen face-on beyond the intervening fell of Brandreth, while Pillar’s great northern face dominates the view beyond Haystacks to the west.
Buttermere or Borrowdale are good choices for a base camp, while there’s a youth hostel at Honister and a campsite at Seathwaite Farm.
Not the best summit but still a nice Wainwright. Worked quite hard to get here from Seathwaite Farm, as I was doing a route from Stuart Marshall's book taking in Grey Knotts, Brandreth, Great Gable, Green Gable and Base Brown. Superb outing!

Grey Knotts is a Wainwright fell in the Lake District. It is commonly hiked from Honister, or along the ridge from Brandreth. The summit is on an outcrop of rocks, the views are beautiful down towards Buttermere.
