Before the First World War, the railway line was intended for the transport of lignite. During the war, the railway line gained national importance in order to relieve the Ruhr-Mosel-Bahn.
After the war, the railway line lost its importance and was shut down.

The embankment is now a ground monument and can be used as a footpath, riding path and, in some cases, a cycle path. Unfortunately, a few bridges on the Rommerskirchen side are broken, so that you have to take small detours there.
