Best Hikes to Pilot Station and Pilot Statue Travemünde

Tips

  • Traffic on the Trave federal waterway is monitored by the Travemünde Traffic Control Center. Experienced nautical officers are stationed day and night in their control center directly on the Trave promenade. They use state-of-the-art technology to ensure the smooth flow of shipping traffic from the Flensburg Fjord to the Buk lighthouse near Kühlungsborn. In the Trave estuary alone, there are more than 50 large ships entering and leaving the harbor every day, from huge passenger and cargo ferries that dock at Travemünde's Scandinavia Quay,
to excursion boats and international cruise ships.
By the way, all ships over 60 meters long and 10 meters wide are required to be piloted. Two pilot boats transport the sea and harbor pilots to their deployment location.A few nautical miles from Travemünde, command on the bridge is briefly transferred to the pilot until the ship is safely in port. The same applies when it leaves the harbor again.
Twenty pilots are on duty at the pilot station in Travemünde, and the shifts run around the clock.

  • Everyone knows the pilot station at the end of the Travepromenade. But actually it is the traffic control center of the water and shipping authority Lübeck and the pilots reside in the annex.

  • This outstanding work of Kiel art ceramics was created in 1925 by the Hamburg sculptor Ludwig Kunstmann (1877-1961).
Kieler Kunst-Keramik, founded in 1924, was a manufactory in which high-quality artistic sculptures were created.
The statue is actually called “Der Seemann” and was designed for the “Kurgarten-Haus” in Travemünde, which used to stand on the corner of Kurgartenstrasse and Am Lotsenberg.
