The patronage "Mary (or in other spelling:) Mariae Assumption" of this Bad Tölz church refers to one of the many commemoration days or festivals in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. It goes back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15.
In many rural areas it is customary for the population to collect bundles of herbs (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) on this day and to bless them in the festival service.

When staying in Bad Tölz you should definitely take the time to visit the town church "Mariä Himmelfahrt". It is worth forgetting the stress and hectic pace of life for a few contemplative minutes and looking at the beauties inside during a prayer!

The parish church towers over the former craftsmen's quarter, the Gries, which today, like the old town centre, is under ensemble protection. Today's building dates from 1466, as a great fire in 1453 destroyed the market place and the early Gothic church. Baumeister was a local "Maister Michael Gugler, Maurer und Purgur zu Tölltz". The tower was covered by a gable roof for a long time and was only crowned with a neo-Gothic spire in 1877. What was new in the redesign of the church was the installation of a winged altar, which is open during church festivals and allows a glimpse of an altar nativity scene with life-size figures by the sculptor Anton Fröhlich.
