The Khan Tower, dating from 1353 and one of the city's most important medieval buildings, which had formed the historical end of Marktstraße, was sacrificed to increasing car traffic by decision of the city council in 1969, despite protests. Subsequently, a new building was constructed, merely approximating and widening the historic original. Instead of the Gothic gateway, the new tower, designed by the architect Hans Döllgast, features a wide, flat arch constructed of concrete. ..."
