This dyke sluice ensures that salty seawater can reach the 350 hectare large recreational area Waterdunen in a controlled manner at high tide. This is the basis for the typical grasses and plants that need salt water.
This creates an artificially created nature reserve.

Behind the lock lies a beautiful nature reserve crisscrossed by water canals

The unique, saline delta nature in Waterdunen with tidal creeks, mud bottoms and grods is made possible by the construction of a tidal culvert at 't Killetje.
The tidal culvert consists of a structure of four tubes that pass through the dike. The first pipe of the tidal culvert drains excess polder water from the hinterland. To drain excess polder water, a drainage ditch was created around Waterdunen.
The three other pipes ensure that salt water from the Westerschelde can flow in and out of the nature reserve at low and high tide. These pipes are equipped with gates that control the water level of the water dunes. If flooding threatens, these gates can be closed completely.
