The castle with the surrounding moat, the fields and the nearby forest invite you to spend time there. Geese and birds can be seen in the meadows. The castle itself can only be seen from the outside and from a distance, as it is private property! But along the moat you can get close via Pättchen.

Varlar Abbey, often referred to as a monastery, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded by the Counts of Cappenberg in the Münsterland. The monastery, which was converted into Varlar Castle, is in the farming community of Varlar in the Osterwick district of Rosendahl. The community there existed from about 1123/24 until secularization in 1803. Afterwards the monastery became the property of the game and Rhine counts of Salm, who took over a large part of the extensive ecclesiastical property and for a short time also became rulers.
