When the diocese of Antwerp was founded in 1559, the church was elevated to a cathedral. The current interior shows traces of different episodes in its history: Baroque altarpieces, neo-Gothic chapels, a wealth of statues, paintings and other works of art are impressive. Especially the Descent from the Cross by Rubens attracts many tourists. The cathedral has been restored both inside and out over the past 50 years. The visitor can now enjoy a beautiful church in very good condition.

The fame of Antwerp Cathedral is certainly not exaggerated. It is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

The cathedral is, however, more than a historical monument: first and foremost, it is a place of worship and a place for people to stay.

        Domus Dei et Porta Coeli

These words in Latin have been used for 8 centuries to describe the mission of every Roman Catholic church building:

“House of God and gate of heaven”. In our cathedral, we work every day on a contemporary interpretation of this mission.
