On a high dune on the Voorstraat in Egmond aan Zee we find the Fisherman's Monument. The memorial stone contains the names of the 150 fishermen who died at sea during the First World War. The monument commemorates this black time of Egmond aan Zee as a fishing village.
During the First World War, Egmond aan Zee was still a real fishing village. The Netherlands had to deal with refugees. In nearby Mons there were internment camps for fled Belgian soldiers and deserted German soldiers. Outbreaks occurred regularly and many roamed the coastal strip.
Shipping and fishing suffered the most from the proclamation of limited submarine warfare in 1917. To hinder the passage of German ships, many mines were placed in the North Sea. Safe fishing became impossible, partly due to mines that had broken loose.

This memorial to those who died in World War I stands on a small hill between the road and the cemetery.

Partly due to loose mines, safe fishing became impossible. Commercial fishing came to a standstill. Driven by poverty, some fishermen still risked their lives and set out to catch fish. Numerous ships were driven to the bottom by mines.
Egmond aan Zee lost more than 100 fishermen in the period 1914 - 1918. Even after the armistice it remained dangerous at sea because of the loose mines. In 1919 and 1920 another 26 fishermen lost their lives. Each death notice plunged the village into deep mourning.
Egmond aan Zee wanted to commemorate her lost fishermen. Initiatives arose, including by the teachers Bos and van Eenennaam, to create a monument. This monument was to be built to commemorate the fishermen who died. There were various designs, but in the end they opted for the design by the Rotterdam sculptor Leendert Bolle.
