Hanau's main train station is located southeast of the city center of Hanau and is the only long-distance train station among the train stations and stops in Hanau. In the eastern Rhine-Main area, it also serves as a train station for regional trains or express trains and the S-Bahn.
It is a crossing station with 11 platform tracks. The Deutsche Bahn station building dates from the 1960s.

The bakery in the main station is currently being rebuilt and is therefore closed. At the moment only the Metzger and Goldenes M are available for supply or there is a gas station on the other side of the main station.

As part of the construction of the Bebra–Hanau line, the temporary terminus Hanau Ost was built at the site of today's Hanau main station and opened on May 1, 1867. The station's functional predecessor was the terminus of the Frankfurt-Hanau Railway Company, which opened in 1848 as a terminus station and was located west of the city center at the site of today's Hanau West stop. On May 15, 1927, the “Hanau Ost” train station was renamed “Hanau Hbf.”
