Above the Birrekoven district of Alfter is the small chapel dedicated to St. Judas Thaddeus. He is one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, his feast is celebrated on October 28th. That is why it is also associated in old peasant rules with the beginning of the winter season: "When Simon and Judas are over, winter is coming."
There are many legends about his work, for example he is mentioned as the first bishop of Edessa, according to other traditions he is said to have proclaimed Christianity in Syria and Mesopotamia. There are also various stories about his martyrdom, relics are kept in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, but also in St. Andrew in Cologne.
