The Franciscan monastery is enthroned on the Frauenberg above Fulda.
In 1237 the first Franciscans came to Fulda and initially settled near today's parish church. The brothers have lived and worked on the Frauenberg since 1623. At first they hesitated to move to the former Benedictine priory on the mountain, because they preferred to live with the people in the middle of the city.
The agreement with the prince abbot of the Fulda bishopric - he had brought the Franciscans back to Fulda in 1620 after the expulsions in the course of the Reformation - therefore also reads "that the brothers may stay until something better is found."
As is well known, nothing lasts longer than a temporary solution! And so the Franciscans are still on the Frauenberg, which is now in the middle of the city of Fulda, and have been working for the city and region for centuries.
In the course of history, the monastery on the Frauenberg had many important tasks.
It was a study house, library, provincial office, administration, archive, nursing home and training center, e.g. for various craft trades or missionaries who set out from here to Brazil or Japan.
Today the cooperation with the social work Antonius and the youth and vocational pastoral work shape the monastery mountain above Fulda.
