Saint Matthias is one of the twelve apostles from the closest circle of Jesus' disciples, but was not - like the rest - called into this office by himself. After the delivery of Jesus by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed for the Holy Spirit and elected a new twelfth apostle. The lot fell on Matthias, as reported in the "Acts of the Apostles" of the New Testament (Acts 1, 15-26). His feast day is on May 14th, in the German-speaking area on February 24th. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier, which is the only apostolic grave north of the Alps.

The three-aisled hall church was built in the late Middle Ages and was originally dedicated to the Holy Cross. Until 1489, the church probably only consisted of a two-aisled building with a wooden roof. The round tower to the southeast originally served as access to the battlement of the outer wall of the castle settlement.
In a second construction phase up to 1491, the southern aisle was built in connection with the defensive wall and the round tower, the choir was extended and the ceiling vaults were created. In a third construction phase, the interior was redesigned and - after a major fire in 1669 - the church tower was raised to its current height. In addition, the bells that had melted in the fire were replaced with new ones. Extensive repairs were necessary between 1860 and 1867 and war damage was repaired between 1948 and 1979. kuladig.de/Objektansicht/O-52835-20120814-3
