The sandstone Hercules Fountain in Maximilianstrasse at the height of Kirchgasse is the oldest of the three market square fountains. On March 6, 1671, Margrave Christian Ernst ordered the old wooden pull-and-tube fountain to be torn down and replaced with a stone fountain. It was built in 1676 by Georg Wieshack from Ulm - based on a design by the then Bayreuth court and palace architect Elias Gedeler (1620-1693). The lion masks on the base pillar date from 1676.

After the sale of the former capital of the Principality of Bayreuth to the Kingdom of Bavaria, the ruling structures changed in 1810. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reign of the Bavarian King Maximilian I, the local main street was renamed Maximilianstraße in his honor in 1824, exactly 200 years ago.
