The Old Palace in Bayreuth was built in 1455 and was the residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth from 1603 to 1753, before the move to the New Palace in the middle of the 18th century. Today the building on Maximilianstrasse is the seat of the third largest tax office in Bavaria.

For around six centuries it has been one of the festival city's landmarks: the Old Palace with its courtyard in the historic city center of Bayreuth on Maximilianstrasse. Until the middle of the 18th century it served as the residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Today the building is the seat of the tax office.

An official residence is said to have existed as early as the 13th century - grouped around today's Harmoniehof - which was expanded into a margrave's bailiff's castle in the 14th century. Repairs are documented at the end of the 15th and 16th centuries, both on the castle and on the castle tower at that time, and in 1577 also for the construction of a water pipe from Rodersberg to the Schlosshofbrunnen. The Margraves of Kulmbach and Ansbach also resided here when they stayed in Bayreuth. Since Margrave Christian (1581/1603-1655) decided to move his residence from the Plassenburg in Kulmbach to Bayreuth when he took office in 1603, the necessary renovations to the core castle were carried out between 1597 and 1606. Margrave Christian Ernst (1644/1661-1712) took care of this for extensions to the outer castle courtyard in the years 1676 to 1689. The uniform facade shape comes from this century, restored in the original color combination of white, red and ocher yellow.
