The Benedictine monastery Lüne is only a few minutes away from the city center of Lüneburg. Although it is surrounded by the city that has expanded since the Middle Ages, an oasis of calm can still be found today. The monastery was founded in 1172 by Hildeswidis von Markboldestorp and has been documented as a Benedictine monastery since 1272.

The cloister courtyard is bordered on three sides by Gothic buildings and impressively bordered on the fourth side by the late baroque guest house. You enter the monastery via the fountain hall, which is dominated by the "Handstein", the Gothic fountain with its bronze bowl. It has become the symbol of the monastery.

The visitor can expect the Gothic cloister and the refectory, the dining room with the exposed wall paintings and the chapter room with the portraits of the abbesses.

In the church, consecrated in 1410, the provost's chair, the baroque organ, the baptismal font and the nun's choir with the lamentation picture from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder are among the works of art that are worth seeing. The Textile Museum, established in 1995, preserves the treasure of altar blankets and Lenten cloths handcrafted by the nuns and canons.

After the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation in the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the Benedictine monastery became a Protestant women's monastery in which aristocratic and bourgeois women still spend their retirement years in the community of their faith.

Beautiful property - if you haven't seen it yet: It's worth building it into a tour.
