It is not clear when a church first existed on Oland, the oldest of the ten Hallig islands still in existence in the North Frisian Wadden Sea; however, it is assumed that there was a wooden church building that survived the heavy floods of 1362 and 1634.

In 1709, a new church was consecrated; this was located on what was then Knudswarf, which belonged to Pipe. This can be seen from an inscription above the entrance to the current church. In 1802, however, the church and residential mounds had moved so close to the edge of the Hallig that they had to be demolished.

The current hall church with its very small church space was built in 1824 and has withstood even the worst storm floods since then. All kinds of inventory comes from the previous church, such as the pulpit, the confessional, the apostle frieze, several epitaphs and large gravestones. The traditional communion equipment also found its place here. It is still used by the congregation today. The pulpit is placed above the small altar.

The Hallig cemetery at the church contains, among other things, the grave of the local poet Wilhelm Lobsien, whose most famous work is "The Hallig Pastor".

Today's Hallig Church of Oland is a hall church from 1824, which withstood the severe storm floods of 1825 and 1962, among other things. The church is very small. The baptismal font dates from the Romanesque period. The figure that adorns the crucifix is of a similar age. The cross itself was later renewed. The altar is small and dates from more recent times.

Even if you don't have much interest in churches, a visit to this building is definitely recommended because it radiates a very special atmosphere and preserves many details and objects from the past centuries.
