Stepping onto the Oland mound opens up a little paradise. Beautiful Frisian houses with beautiful gardens and lots of greenery are close together and result in a beautiful center. You should definitely visit and delicious cakes are also available there

Oland is 2.9 kilometers long, 500 to 980 meters wide and covers an area of 2.01 km². About 20 residents mostly live all year round in 18 houses on a terp, the Olandwarft.

Oland has a church, an inn, a community center with a library and the only thatched lighthouse (beacon) in Germany. In the center of the terp is the fething (historic cattle trough).

The Hallig Oland was connected to the Hallig Langeneß until the Burchardi flood in 1634. Over the centuries, this connection has been destroyed by storm surges. Oland itself also lost ashore. Since the second terp was destroyed in a storm tide in 1850, people have all lived on one terp.

Oland was first connected to the mainland by a dam in 1860. But it was not until the construction of the Lorendamm from 1925 to 1927 that a storm-proof connection was established, which also lasted in the winter months and still exists today. The dam serves as a mudflat safety dam for the transport of material and people for coastal protection. The Hallig residents are allowed to use the dam with their own carts, for example to run errands on the mainland.
