Gröde is a region in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. The stone edge that almost completely surrounds it protects the island from loss of land during storm surges.

The Hallig floods an average of twenty to thirty times a year near Landunter (with the exception of the two terps). The two terps are settlement areas for the local population. There are four residential buildings on the Knudtswarft. The Kirchwarft is a little smaller. The Hallig School, the church and a teacher's apartment are located here. At 4.3 m above sea level, it is the highest elevation on the Hallig. The school and teacher's apartment have been empty since 2012.
On Kirchwarft, the cemetery is located next to the church and school building combined under one roof. The use of the school depends on whether children of school age live in Val Gardena. The church in the western part of this building dates from 1779 and is the seventh church building in Val Gardena since the Mandränke in 1362. In 1615, the second church in Val Gardena had to be demolished and rebuilt further inland. This was destroyed again in the ice flood of 1625 and could not withstand the Burchardi flood of 1634. It suffered again from the storm surge of 1717, only to be demolished again in 1721. During the February flood of 1825, the west wall, gable and two compartments of the roof collapsed. The existing church would also have been destroyed by storm surges if government intervention in 1899 had not prevented this by fortifying the entire Halligufer to prevent further demolition. Inside the church there is a Renaissance altar from 1592, a pulpit from the late 18th century and a baptismal font from 1705. A remnant of an earlier church is the triumphal cross from around 1500. The pastor from Hallig Langeneß travels to church services.

The small church is worthwhile. But it smells quite "musty" there. (Old walls in the middle of the North Sea on the Hallig?

A beautiful, old church. Lovingly maintained. There is so much to discover. Here you become aware of what life must have been like in the past. The church alone is worth a visit.
