The castle started as a farm in the 12th century and was later converted into a fortified moated castle in the 14th century. It served as an important outpost and defense for the city of Ghent along the Leie. Inside, the castle has a neo-Flemish Renaissance style, with a house chapel in neo-Byzantine style. The castle was given monument status in 1944, followed by some surrounding buildings in 1980 and the castle grounds and surroundings in 1995.
