Whales used to be heavily hunted from Harlingen. Fortunately, this no longer happens, but for unclear reasons they often strand in shallow water. Similarly, this sperm whale, designed by Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla from the United States and Cuba for art project 11fountains.
